Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit position requiring at least 1 year of nursing experience and EPIC charting proficiency.
Details
- Hospital-based Medical unit with 36-48 beds, including flex semi-private rooms as needed
- Mixed Med/Surg to Intermediate Care (IMC) patient population, approximately 90% Med/Surg and 10% Intermediate Care
- Cares for patients with diagnoses including DKA, pre/post-surgical, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure (with or without hemodialysis), hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injuries, minor fractures, DVTs, and occasional CVA overflow
- Administers oral, IV, IM, and SQ medications, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feedings, and blood product transfusions
- Manages peripheral IV, midline, PICC, and central line access, chest tubes, NG tubes, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices
- Provides preventative and restorative skin and wound care
- Reads and interprets telemetry monitoring
- Patient ratios vary by care area: 1:5-6 for long length of stay Med/Surg (no telemetry), 1:5 for Med/Surg/Telemetry, and 1:4 for Intermediate Care
- Unit support includes CNAs at a 1:8 ratio, a non-patient-load charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and 24/7 RT and hospitalist coverage
- No dedicated resource nurse on the unit
- Charting/equipment includes Epic, Omnicell, and Alaris
- Schedule follows 6-week blocks with weekend rotation of up to 4 of 6 weekends (Friday-Sunday), including possible every-other-weekend (WOW) scheduling
- No mandatory on-call, though optional extra on-call shifts may be available
- May float to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation, within scope of practice and in rotation with other travelers
- Shift schedule: 12-hour day shifts
Requirements
- Active RN license (South Dakota Board of Nursing or Compact) currently in hand
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required
- Completion of an accredited nursing education program
- Epic EMR experience required, including for first-time travelers
- Comfortable accepting Med/Surg assignments
- Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patient populations, including ability to float to Oncology
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips
- Skilled in wound care, line management, and drain/tube management
- Comfortable with drip titration including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and occasionally Esmolol, other beta blockers, or antihypertensives
Additional Information
- Two days of unit/department orientation including policies, protocols, and online learning modules, plus classroom time with the Nursing Professional Development Team
- Two orientation shifts on the unit with a preceptor
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring, requiring 90% compliance
- Navy blue scrub color required
- Free parking available
- First-time travelers will be considered if they have more than 1 year of experience and EPIC proficiency
- Traveler must live at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility; no local candidates accepted
- Former permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a traveler
- RTO requests are not currently being accepted during winter holidays and should be submitted to the manager for approval
- Time off up to a week and a half can be approved, with extensions required for a full week off
- Blackout dates apply for the first 2-3 weeks of August due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, during which no time off is approved
- Facility is known for being traveler-friendly with high renewal rates
