Description
American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a Staff Float Pool position requiring AL or compact RN license, night shifts, and at least 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience.
Details
- Staff Float Pool position within a 492-bed hospital that is a Level II Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
- Assigned to a home unit on the first day of orientation, which may include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, or MedSurg/Ortho/Urology
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedics, urology, and general medsurg diagnoses
- Typical patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit
- 12-hour night shifts (7:00 pm start), scheduled 36/48 hours per week
- Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
- No on-call requirements
- Floating required to like units, including MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU (task only), MS-to-ER/holds, or similar ICU float patterns
- EMR: Cerner preferred
- Uses Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- Telemetry monitored by dedicated Telemetry Techs, RNs required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- Support staff on units includes CNAs, HUC/receptionist, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist
Requirements
- Active RN license (AL state or compact) required
- BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience required
- Cerner experience required if candidate has strictly ICU experience; EPIC or Cerner experience accepted for MedSurg background
- Trauma/surgical experience required for surgical unit placement (at least 1 year)
- Skills may include wound care, chest tube management, NGT, PEG, foley/catheter care, tracheostomy care, IV starts, central line care, ostomy care, and PCA pump management depending on unit assignment
- Telemetry strip interpretation skills required
- Prior traveler staff must have been separated from the facility for at least 6 months before returning as a contractor
Additional Information
- First-time travelers will be considered
- Orientation includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours on the unit for travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ years
- Rehire orientation length depends on last date worked at the facility
- Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific dates are not guaranteed off prior to arrival
- Facility observes blackout dates throughout the year during which time-off requests require additional approval
- Up to 7 days of time off can be pre-approved excluding blackout dates
- Scrubs of any color are permitted
- Parking available in designated parking deck levels only
- Schedule follows a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling; Smart Square system is utilized
- Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible for the travel position
