Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is accepting applications for a two-year extracorporeal renal replacement therapy fellowship. The fellowship is designed to provide clinical training in all aspects of extracorporeal therapies as well as research study design and reporting.  The fellowship will prepare the candidate for an academic career in this discipline. Applicants should have completed a residency in internal medicine and be either board certified or board eligible in ACVIM (SAIM) or ECVIM.

The fellow will be appointed in a faculty position as a clinical instructor and function as part of the small animal nephrology/urology team in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals, working with 2 clinical nephrology/urology faculty, 8 small animal internal medicine residents who are trained in extracorporeal therapy, as well as two dedicated extracorporeal therapy technicians. We seek an enthusiastic, team-oriented clinician who will provide outstanding patient care, client care, and service to our referring veterinarians in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals. We have a well-established extracorporeal therapy service equipped to provide renal replacement therapies (Fresenius™ 2008T, Prismaflex™, Carpediem™), hemoperfusion, membrane and centrifugal therapeutic plasma exchange, and mononuclear cell collection. We are fully equipped to provide interventional endourology and other minimally invasive procedures.

We are seeking a candidate who is committed to excellent patient care and who shares an enthusiastic dedication to teaching our students, technicians, interns, and residents. Anticipated percentage allocations for this position are 70% clinical activity and 30% academic time. The fellow will spend the majority of their clinical time on the Nephology/Urology Service, with some consultations in the Hospital for Large Animals. Academic time will be divided among specialty training at continuing education procedure laboratories, CE meetings, and research activities. Emergency duties are shared with the Nephrology/Urology Faculty and SAIM residents. Participation in a research project is expected.

Training will occur at the Foster Hospital for Small Animals in North Grafton, MA, approximately 40 miles west of Boston. The FHSA has a robust clinical caseload (~35,000 cases/year), excellent student teaching and house officer training programs, and supports clinical research programs. Additional features of the FHSA include VECCS Level 1 emergency service, an interventional radiology suite, two dedicated rooms for medicine special procedures, Olympus and Storz endoscopy, bronchoscopy and cystoscopy with image capturing,  a dedicated ultrasound machine, a 3T MRI, a helical multi-slice CT, a fully equipped nuclear medicine suite, C-arm fluoroscopy, portable radiography, laparoscopy/arthroscopy,  and Varian linear accelerator with cone beam CT, a multi-leaf collimator and stereotactic radiotherapy.

Qualifications: Requirements include a DVM or its equivalent and completion of a residency program in internal medicine approved by the ACVIM or the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine by the effective date of appointment.

The salary range for the position is $80,000 - $100,000. The pay offered within the posted range will be determined based on a variety of factors such as (but not limited to) the individual’s education and experience, discipline, rank, internal equity, and budgetary considerations.  

Cummings School is situated in Grafton, MA on a 600-acre pastoral campus, forty-five minutes west of Boston and next door to Worcester, the second largest city in Massachusetts.  A virtual tour of the campus is available here.
