Description
Medical Director, Kidney Transplantation
BayCare Health System | Tampa, Florida
BayCare Health System is seeking an accomplished transplant nephrologist to serve as Medical Director of Kidney Transplantation and lead the development and long-term success of a new kidney and kidney–pancreas transplant program at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, launching in partnership with Northwestern Medicine. Kidney transplant procedures are anticipated to begin in 2027, offering a rare opportunity to help build and shape a program from the ground up within a community-based academic model.
As Medical Director, you will provide clinical, operational, and strategic leadership for the kidney and kidney–pancreas transplant service. Working closely with BayCare and Northwestern Medicine leadership, you will guide the implementation of the program’s mission and strategic plan, advancing clinical quality, patient access, operational excellence, and long-term program sustainability.
This is an outstanding leadership role for a physician who is passionate about high-quality transplant care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and program growth—while continuing to practice clinically.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the overall direction and performance of the kidney and kidney–pancreas transplant program, ensuring exceptional, patient-centered care that meets or exceeds clinical, regulatory, and service standards.
- Provide oversight and coordination of multidisciplinary transplant resources to support productivity, financial stewardship, and operational efficiency.
- Play a central role in waitlist management, donor–recipient matching, and weekly transplant listing conferences in collaboration with BayCare and Northwestern Medicine transplant teams.
- Partner closely with transplant coordinators and clinical teams to align candidate selection and donor acceptance with established algorithms, including the evaluation of higher-risk donors.
- Share responsibility for organ offers, serving as primary call for offers and collaborating with the on-call transplant surgeon to ensure optimal recipient matching.
- Support best-practice strategies to preserve donor kidney viability during recovery and transport.
- Drive year-over-year growth in transplant volume while maintaining strong clinical, operational, and regulatory performance.
- Ensure clinical and research protocols are current, compliant, and consistently maintained.
- Provide comprehensive clinical care across the transplant continuum, including candidate evaluation, waitlist management, peri-transplant care, and post-transplant follow-up.
- Contribute to strategic planning and long-term growth of the transplant program within a collaborative, community-based academic environment.
Qualifications
- MD or DO with completion of an ACGME-accredited Nephrology fellowship.
- Board Certified in Nephrology.
- Eligible to serve as OPTN Primary Physician for a kidney transplant program, including required case logs.
- Unrestricted Florida medical license (or ability to obtain prior to start).
- Demonstrated clinical expertise in the care of adult kidney transplant patients.
- Proven ability to care for a diverse patient population, including individuals with complex medical conditions or communication needs.
- Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with sound clinical judgment and quality assessment expertise
